Is it Time to Update Your Headshots?
I frequently get asked by business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, models, and actors how often you really need to update your headshots when they inquire about a headshot session.
The challenge in answering the question is that there isn’t a short answer - it depends.
Different industries have varying expectations of when you should update your headshot. A social media influencer will need more frequent headshot updates in addition to more variety of images for use on their social media accounts. Models and entertainers may choose to update their profile images based on jobs they are currently auditioning. Those in jobs that rarely interact directly with clients may only need updates every 4-5 years.
Regardless of your industry, you will reach a point many times in your career when you need to update your headshots. Here are a few tips to consider to help you determine if now is the right time for new images:
Do you look different? Times change and as time passes we change in many ways. So if you have recently changed your hairstyle, added or shaved facial hair, added glasses (or no longer wear glasses), gained or lost weight, or changed your overall look, it’s a good indication that you should get an updated headshot that accurately reflects the new you.
Are you targeting a new type of client in your business? Are you updating branding for your business or personal brand? If you are taking your business in a new direction or simply expanding your target client you may want updated headshots for social media and press use to better connect with this new segment or add personality to your brand.
Have you recently changed roles in your company or career? If so, an older headshot may not convey the updated responsibility you want clients to associate with your new role. As your position within your company changes your headshots should keep pace. The headshot you had for your entry level job should not be the headshot you keep as you climb the corporate ladder.
Are you currently searching for your next career opportunity? The headshot on your Linked-In profile should look like the current you. An updated image will help you create a connection to your interviewers as you are looking for your next job. You should work with your professional photographer to ensure your new headshot portrays your future career goals, not just your next career step.
Does your current headshot look like it is from a previous decade? If you have a hairstyle or clothing choices in your current headshot that clearly ties it to a previous decade it’s a good policy to get a new headshot that is more current.
The importance of an accurate headshot helps communicate honesty and transparency when you first meet with potential employers or clients and they can easily recognize you from your profile image. This starts your interaction off with the right energy and helps build a connection you can build upon.
Still not sure if you need to make an update to your headshot? I’d be happy to help you review your current images and see if they need to be updated.
