How to Prep for your High School Senior Photo Session
You have your high school senior photo session booked and are excited to capture beautiful images that perfectly tell your story. But what happens between booking your session and showing up? Not to worry. Whether you’re involved in sports, music, or drama, you can have one-of-a-kind senior photos that will translate into beautiful printed artwork from your session that you will cherish forever. The key to getting these images actually takes some preparation.
As a photographer who has been capturing high school senior pictures for many years here in Des Moines, I have run into just about every situation that can happen for senior photos. Here’s how you can prepare for your senior pictures and show up on session day full of style and confidence, ready to rock your photos. I share these tips with all my clients as soon as they book their session (not just high school seniors) and today I’m going to share this list with you.
Hair and Makeup Decisions
First things first. If you want to have your hair and makeup professionally done prior to your session, book this as soon as you have your session booked. Many hair and makeup artists book up as fast as photographers, so if this is something you are considering, ask your photographer for their recommendations on who they recommend in your area for high school senior session hair and makeup. For hair and makeup, I recommend a natural yet polished look. A professional hair and makeup artist can help you get that flawless look perfect for the camera. If you prefer to do your own hair and makeup, start practicing beforehand to perfect your session day look.
Choose Outfits That Reflect Your Personality
Your wardrobe actually plays a big role in how you will feel about your photos after your session—both 2 months from now as well as 20 years from now. You should be picking outfits that reflect your personality. It is fun to go on a shopping spree prior to your session and buy new outfits that look great in the store window, but if you don’t feel like you when you wear them, it comes through in your photos. Choose items you already own that you love and add in new pieces that you will want to wear again and again. Bring a mix of different styles to your session for a variety of looks in your final image gallery.
Props and Personal Items
If you want to include items that have meaning to you in your senior photos, start thinking about what you want to include. Are you a cheerleader? Bring your pom-poms! Love playing the violin? Bring it along! Want to include your dog in some of your senior photos? Bring them along! These props add a personal touch to your photos and help tell your unique story.
One to Two Weeks Before Your Session
This is a good time for a haircut or trim so your hair looks fresh for your session without looking too short. If you color your hair, this is also a good time to get touch-ups or a color refresh so your hair is ready for the camera. Try on your selected outfits with accessories and shoes and finalize your selections. This is also a great time to send your photographer pictures of your outfits if you haven’t already shared this with them.
Wash, dry, and iron or dry-clean your outfits if needed and then hang everything on a hanger ready to transport to your session. Wrinkles in your clothes will show on camera and many photographers will charge you extra to edit out wrinkles. Do not show up to your session with your clothes crumpled up in a shopping bag.
If you are doing your own hair and makeup, start practicing your looks so you are comfortable getting ready the day of your session. If you are wanting to use a teeth whitener, now is a good time to start at-home applications.
About a Week Before Your Session
If you are having a manicure or pedicure, get that scheduled for a couple of days before your session. Pack props you plan to use so you don’t forget them on the day of your session. Pack your accessories and shoes for your outfits. Bring a few extra options in case you want to change things up. I also recommend bringing a pair of shoes that are comfortable for walking in, even if you are not planning to use them for any of your outfits. Focus on getting enough sleep and drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking fresh and radiant.
The Day Before Your Session
Know your timeline—when you have appointments and when and where you start your session. Pack everything (except your pet) and have it ready to go. Include an emergency touch-up kit for hair, makeup, and clothing. Eat well so you have enough energy for your session. Pack a snack if you have a longer session scheduled so you don’t get hangry at your session.
The Day of Your Session
Show up ready to have fun! And don’t forget your pet if you wanted to include them in your session.
